Workforce Development

The availability of a trained, or at least trainable, workforce is a must for any city, county or region to be successful in recruiting new industry or expansion of existing industry. Grenada has the available workforce to sustain employment growth as is shown in two workforce reports completed by Pathfinders (Pathfinders 2007 Workforce Survey).
In order to sustain a trainable workforce, Grenada High School has the Grenada Career and Technical Center, which advances a practical learning environment by furnishing sequenced programs designed to prepare students for entry-level employment or further specialty study in a variety of job skill areas. The Vo-Tech introduces training options for the student in the following courses: Allied Health I and II, Automotive Mechanics I and II, Building Trades I and II, Business Computer Technology I and II, Cooperative Education I and II, Horticulture I and II, Metal Trades I and II, Technology Applications I and II, Family Dynamics, Technology Discovery, and Family/Individual Health.
Grenada's School-to-Careers initiative gives our local students the opportunity to plan for the future. Through the implementation of various endeavors, students acquire critical knowledge and skills initiating informed decisions for developing a successful career strategy. Alliances with community partners have developed educational programs that are relevant to the student's future. The School-to-Careers initiatives collaborate with other partners to increase the career awareness of our populace.
Training capabilities are almost limitless at the Industrial Training Complex at Holmes Community College in Grenada. A Workforce Development Center is located on the Grenada Campus to coordinate the following services for area industries: pre-employment training, post-employment training, upgrade training, leadership training, retraining, skills enhancement, training manual, CD Rom and video tape development with the Research and Curriculum Unit at Mississippi State University. Customized and individualized training, on campus or at the industry location, can meet the needs of employers in the Grenada area. Video Conferencing and distance learning facilities are available in the Industrial training Complex’s state of the art multimedia room. To ensure that graduates have the skills required by local industries the vocational/technical instructors actively work with industry representatives to plan and develop curriculum. These representatives are invited to sit on Craft committees which review programs annually.
