Historical Cemeteries

In addition to the beautiful & historic buildings, the tour includes visits to historic districts as well as the "Confederate Cemetery" and the "Yellow Fever Cemetery".

In 1878 the first Yellow Fever death in Grenada was recorded on August 9th. "For three months death stalked the streets of Grenada, snatching up its prey indiscriminately, sometimes wiping out whole families. It was reminiscent of the Black Plague which struck Europe many years before. As then, carts went through the streets calling for those yet living to throw out their dead.

There is no accurate figure of the number of deaths. Many were buried without grave markers. It has been estimated that 80-90% of Grenada had been wiped out by the epidemic. This included the town doctor and his family.
The Pilot Club of Grenada has maintained the cemetery for the past 20 years.
