Director’s August 2014 Article
As summer comes to a close, and our thoughts turn to fall, school, and football, the Chamber is excited to be partnering with the Mississippi State University Extension Service and the Mississippi Development Authority to host a series of webinars that provide strategies for enhancing the online presence of your business. While there is no doubt that traditional forms of marketing (including this newspaper) remain very important, it is also no secret that the internet has opened a whole new world of opportunity for businesses to gain greater exposure.

We kicked off this series with an in-person presentation from Dr. Roberto Gallardo from the faculty of the MSU Extension Service Center for Technology Outreach. In this meeting at the Extension Office in Grenada, Dr. Gallardo provided an overview of the digital economy and broadband applications. Now, that may sound technical and complicated (and it did to me at first), but Dr. Gallardo makes the complex very understandable for those of us who have limited exposure to the technological capabilities of the web. And, those in attendance who already had some experience in this arena reported that they, too, learned some valuable information.

On August 13 at noon, the series continued with a session that focused on driving customers to your business through mobile devices (smart phones, iPads, etc.). This presentation was offered via webinar, which allowed staff from the MDA Entrepreneur Center to broadcast live to locations all over the state.

The series will continue on the second Wednesday of each of the next three months – September 10, October 8, and November 12. Each session is at noon and is free to Chamber members. Lunch is provided, and we will continue to host the webinars in the Chamber Board Room until we can no longer accommodate everyone in that limited space, at which point we’ll identify a more suitable venue. We cordially invite Chamber members to join us; just be sure to RSVP by calling the Chamber office!

In closing I want to thank Jerome Boudreaux and the fine folks at the Antique Mall for hosting a Business After Five on July 17th of this year. It was a great opportunity for the community to come see all of the beautiful furniture, décor, accessories, clothing, and boots available featured at that venue. The event was well-attended, and we were treated some great food and desserts!

Any Chamber member can host a Business After Five at your establishment, and we encourage you to do so. The Chamber promotes the event, it brings the community into your place of business, and your only cost is for refreshments of your choice. We’ll even host a BA5 at the Chamber office if your facility is not set up to receive guests. We did so for our friend Charles Breland with CB Satellite Service, a Dish network provider, and had a great time. Just call the Chamber office to schedule YOUR Business After Five!
